A study on Swedish massage therapy was performed using volunteers. All of the volunteers received 50-minute massages. Following the massage, all the volunteers showed lowered cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone that is responsible for stress. Also, they found lower levels of a hormone called arginine vasopressin, which can lead to high cortisol levels.

The benefits didn’t stop there though. It was also found that the number of white blood cells, immune system cells, was increased, which leads to a stronger immune system.

There is more than one type of technique used in Swedish massage. There are various hand movements that include circular pressure or kneading. Some massage therapists also use tapping or stretching motions. It’s very important that during and even before your massage that you communicate with your massage therapist to improve your overall experience.
